19.12.2016 - Seasons Greetings! - Christmas 2016 Update

Season’s greetings everyone! We are in full swing down south, as usual. Skipper Dave Roberts and crew on Pelagic Australis are on their way back from the December Antarctic cruise, the first of three. It was and still is quite a heavy ice year, with few yachts or cruise ships making it south of the Gerlache Straits. But that is one of the attractions of this early season cruise – “Ice with Everything.”

The Pelagic has also been busy. See this link to Stephen Venables web site for the report on the Shackleton Traverse on South Georgia by the granddaughter and great grandsons of Tom Crean – the Tom Crean who was with Shackleton on the famous boat journey and the trek across the unexplored interior of the island in 1916. This was a great way for us to have contributed to the last year of the three year centenary of Shackleton’s epic.

Immediately following that expedition, Skipper Alec Hazell and mate Giselle were off to Elephant Island and the South Shetlands with Tom Hart and his team from Penguin Lifelines, an Oxford University based project monitoring penguin colonies with camera traps in the Antarctic and South Georgia.
